Hunting

"I can't live without nature nature, its different each moment. Ever new clouds, water, grass, trees... Thoughts come easily while hunting...especially by the water..." (MA.Sholokhov).

Don hunting has ancient traditions. For numerous tribes of nomads and later first Cossacks hunting in the boundless deserted steppes was the only means of getting food. In that time in flood landed forests were abundant with trapping game. There were a lot of elks, deer, buffalos, bears. The Don hunting had its peculiarities. Cossacks formed big groups of 100 people and went far away from their settlements towards Hopyor, Medveditsa, llovlya and stayed there for 2 or 3 month. A lot of ungulates and small animals were whipped with lashes because Cossacks saved gunpowder; wild horses were caught with lasso. They trapped birds.

At present moment 54 spices of mammals, 207 spices of birds, 8 spices of reptiles, 5 spices of amphibia are found on the territory of the reserve museum. The populations of elks, European deer, beavers and steppe marmot have been restored. Each year the population of rare spices of animals and birds such as musk-rat, osprey, white-tailed sea eagle, gray crane, little bustard, bustard, white swan.

In the Upper Don there 3 hunting seasons on water foul such as partridge, quail, pheasants; on ungulates (deer, roe deer, boar, doe, elk) and also animals such as
hares, foxes.

There is a Rostov state experimental hunting farm in Veshenskaya. Under the protection of huntsmen elks, deer, roe deer and boars live on the territory of more than
20 0000 hectares. Wild animals are also under protection in Elanskyi reserve which covers the territory of 16 000 hectares. Elks, deer, roe deer which could be hunted with a license inhabit the forests of Bokonov region . In steppes of Bokonov region one can find hares, foxes, steppe marmot. Besides one can find hunting water foul: partridge, quail and on the banks of steppe natural water reservoirs - pheasants. The hunting fauna is being preserved in Popovsky reserve covering the territory of 10,3 hectares.
Hunters enjoy nature as beautiful and generous as Sholokhov depicted it. The Upper Don hunting won't leave anybody indifferent neither a professional nor an amateur. There are excellent views for those who prefer real hunting to a photo one.
