The Sholokhov Reserve-museum

Veshensky memorial historical complex

On the 24th in 1987 in Veshenskaya in Sholokhov 103 street a memorial house-museum of the writer where he lived since 1927 till 1935 was opened. Here he wrote the third book of "Still Don" and the first of chapters of "Virgin Soil Upturned" and also a lot of sketches and articles.

The house represents a Don "kuren" with an attic, cellar, veranda, nice fretted lock-plates and laid on carving. The excursion starts with the writer's dear mother's Anastasia Danilovna's room . A lot his mother's good traits of character were characteristic of the heroines, for instance the image of Il'inichna in "Still Don".

The layout under the code name "Family Album" is located in the hall, which is the biggest room in the house. Here the pictures, letters, papers telling about Sholokhov's acquaintances and relatives are displayed. Besides the photos of the people he was close with in the 30-s are also shown here.

In Sholokhov's former study one can see memorial things and books, desk and writing supplies, bookcase, armchair, kerosene lamp, sofa - everything that he used in everyday life and creative work. He used to keep late hours in the study, working over manuscripts in the light of the kerosene lamp. To the left from the porch one can go down some stairs  to the underground floor. Here in two small halls foodstuff and utensils were kept. The Sholokhovs' cook Natalia Antonovna Dolgova used to live here for a long time. In this part of the house the family's dining-room was situated.

The former arrangement of the yard is restored. The shed, the cellar, the summer oven, the summer-house were located on the area of the country estate in the 1930-s. In one of the yard buildings an exhibition "Hunting and Fishing" is orginized. It is absolutely unique because clothes, outfit, spoon-baits, lures, rods all belonged to the writer himself. In the center one might see a Sholokhov pair-oar flat-bottomed Cossack boat peculiar of the Upper Don.
