Folklore-literary holiday "Sholokhov's Spring"
Since 1985 the folklore-literary holiday "Sholokhov's Spring" is annually celebrated in Veshenskay. In 1987 it gained the status of "interregional" and in 1990 that of "international". In May lots of guests from all parts of Russia and abroad come to Veshenskaya. All of them are united by the same feeling of love to Sholokhov's creative work, careful treatment of his inheritage, desire to visit the famous places, to learn more about the world famous writer's life and to take part in international holiday.
Famous writers, poets, actors, scientists, art historians, journalists and artists are among the guests. Ensembles from Ukraine, Italy, France, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Austria and other countries perform here.
The holiday comes early in the morning like in old times and begins with the waking-up. Folklore groups in bright costumes walk along the streets singing and dancing. The party moves towards the stanitsa's centre.
In the central street one can see art shops from Rostov, Volgograd and Voronezh regions.
The holiday is celebrated on the Don's bank where various scenes from Sholokhov's works are staged, on the square's stage, where the holiday is opened and concert takes place on the stadium. The gala-concert on the water and fireworks are the final steps in the holiday.
The "Sholokhov's Spring" holiday is quite a remarkable event in the cultural life of Russia. It reflects the great influence of Sholokhov's personality and his works on the spiritual development the country. The celebration is a great stimulus for keeping and developing of unique Don Region, it encourages the setting of creative links of Russia with foreign countries.
