Folk Handicrafts
Don culture is unique. Folk Handicrafts played an important part in it. Since early times Cossacks were involved in blinkers making, patchwork, wood painting, ceramics making. Lace towels and napkins, cloths, fabric carpets added a special look to a house, which was decorated with embroidered cloths on special events.
Cossacks had lots of ceramics, which was decorated with glaze, painting and simple relief ornament.
Withe and straw wicker-work was very popular on Don. Baskets had various shapes and sizes, mostly rough but there were some fine examples.
Great attention to applied art, keeping and inheriting traditions was paid here. Fairs, sale exhibitions were organized in stanitsas. Now many Cossack handicrafts are being revived.
During "Sholokhov Spring" (an international folklore holiday) a bid fair is arranged on central square of Veshenskaya. Best works of wicker, patchwork, blinkers making, metal forging, carving, furriery are displayed. Many of them become exhibits of the best Russian and foreign museums.
